Rendering of a small affordable accessory dwelling unit in Richmond, VA

Revit & Enscape — Senior Middle of Broad Design Studio, Fall ‘24

The “Moments of Hope” (MoHope) organization aims to create a low-cost, 500 sq. ft. Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) in Richmond, VA, to provide affordable housing for the chronically homeless. MoHope sought partnership with mOb Studio and Storefront for Community Design to design a model home that can be replicated across the city with a budget of $35,000.

The ADU features two bedrooms, one bath, a kitchenette, built-in furniture, and outdoor space, following City of Richmond’s ADU requirements. My group consisted of 3 interior design students and our involvement with this project spanned over three months including constant client engagement and communication for design feedback, ensuring that the final product aligns with the needs of both the community and MoHope’s mission.

This project’s final design focuses on creating a transitionary space — reflecting not just a home but a step toward a new life. It embodies the journey of change and renewal, symbolizing hope and possibility for those who enter it. As residents embark on their path to stability, this home serves as a reminder to embrace the unexpected, to cherish the small victories along the way, and to look forward to the future with optimism.
