Mixed Media

An object of personal significance — the eye — rendered five different ways in five different mediums, including a digital collage memorializing victims of anti-LGBTQ+ violence.

Mixed media collection of an eye rendered in five different mediums

Mixed Media Collection — Surface Research, Fall ‘21

This assignment was called “Found in Translation” and required us to choose an object of personal significance and render it five different times using five different mediums. I chose to create a digital collage, an inverted colors colored pencil drawing, wire and mixed media sculptures, and an embroidered eye.

In my digital collage, I edited together photos of individuals killed by acts of violence against the LGBTQ+ community. Each photo is tinted a different color of the rainbow to create a vibrant and relevant gradient and circles of text are overlaid onto the form to show the details and help the eye take shape. These circles of text consist of all the names of the people in the photos making up the eye and are overlapped by more text reading “YOU ARE SEEN”.

I wanted this collection to be sort of all over the place, but tied together by the fact that each piece is representative of the same thing.
