I Can't Hear You

Mixed Media

A mixed media model burying the foundation of an old, painful living situation under an idealized vision of a new, peaceful one.

Mixed media model of an idealized new room built atop the foundation of an old, painful one

20.5” x 10” x 18” Mixed Media — Surface Research, Fall ‘21

For my final integrative project in surface research, I decided to base it off of something important my life heavily revolved around at the time — leaving my toxic roommate and moving into my own space. This project aimed to create an idealized model of my soon to be new room on top of the foundation of the old room — effectively burying the pain and hurt my old dwelling caused me with objects of personal importance.

I laid out my old room’s foundation with cardboard and found objects, then covered that in cool colors as a base for the model. The interior decorations are warm, colorful, happy, and personal to me, while the outside is covered in words my old roommate called me. Above the model on the wall, I hung a “I Can’t Hear You” sign to reinforce the idea that what my old roommate thinks no longer matters to me and finally moving out has brought me peace.
