Mixed Media
Mental Health

A mixed media exploration of childhood, mental health, and the act of making — set against walls of pharmaceutical text.

Mixed media canvas combining children's letter blocks, walls of text, and a needle and thread

11” x 14” Mixed Media on Canvas — Surface Research, Fall ‘21

This project was an exploration of how text works in conjunction with art, and my piece connects my childhood with my mental health. I wanted to create a contrast between the positive message of the simple children’s letter blocks and the walls of text behind them describing every little thing about the medications I take.

The inclusion of the needle and thread has a bit of a double meaning. I did a lot of sewing growing up and picked up a lot of my artistic ambition and creativity from that, but as I got older, some sharp objects involved in sewing became more and more triggering for me. There’s always a little twinge of anxiety when I sit behind a sewing machine now, something difficult but also very necessary for me to face head on.
